The LinkedIn character limit
A LinkedIn post is limited to 3,000 characters, and a LinkedIn article to 125,000.
- LinkedIn's own help centre states it plainly: “The character limit for a post is 3,000 characters.” Spaces, numbers, emoji and letters all count.
- Links and hashtags count in full — LinkedIn shortens links for display, not for counting.
- Articles are the long-form route and allow 125,000 characters, which is why long posts are so often published as articles instead.
- The feed cuts a post off after roughly two lines behind a “…see more”. LinkedIn does not publish that number and it moves with screen width, so treat the first ~140–210 characters as the part everyone reads.
- A LinkedIn Premium subscription buys no extra characters — the 3,000 is the same on every account type.
Tier differences
What happens if you go over the limit on LinkedIn
In the app
The composer stops accepting input at 3,000 characters and the Post button is disabled — pasting a longer draft silently drops what does not fit, so check the end of your text.
Through the API
The Posts API returns a 400 with FIELD_LENGTH_TOO_LONG, naming commentary as the field that is too long. Nothing is published.
Character limits on every platform
The same post is a different length on every network. This is the full comparison, with the document each number comes from.

LinkedIn questions
What is the character limit on LinkedIn?
3,000 characters for a post. LinkedIn's help centre states it plainly, and it is the same on free and Premium accounts, personal profiles and company pages. Spaces, numbers, emoji and letters all count.
How many characters show before “see more” on LinkedIn?
Roughly two lines — about 140 to 210 characters, depending on screen width. LinkedIn does not publish the number and it changes between mobile and desktop, so write the hook to land inside the first 140 characters and it will survive everywhere.
How do I post more than 3,000 characters on LinkedIn?
Publish an article instead of a post — articles allow 125,000 characters, keep their formatting and stay indexed. The alternatives are a chain of posts or continuing in the comments under your own post.
Does LinkedIn Premium give me more characters?
No. Premium buys reach and messaging features, not post length. The 3,000-character limit is the same on every account type.
