The short answer

What are Bluesky labels?

Labels are Bluesky's way of moderating. Instead of quietly deleting or burying things, a moderation service attaches a short tag, such as spam, rude or porn, to an account or a post. Each Bluesky app then decides what to do with that tag: hide the content, show it behind a warning, or show it normally.

Bluesky runs its own moderation service, and its labels are on by default for everyone. Anyone can also run a labeler, which people subscribe to in Settings, then Moderation. This checker reads the labels from Bluesky's own service, because those are the ones that affect every user.

Labels are public, signed records. That is why this tool can list them for any handle without logging in, and why you can appeal each one from the app.

Common questions about specific labels

The labels people ask about most

Rude

Applied to crude or disrespectful posts with no constructive purpose. It is hidden by default, so a rude label on a reply means most people never see it.

Spam

For repeated, unwanted or unrelated actions. On an account it hides everything you post for people who keep the default setting. Mass following is the usual cause.

Engagement farming

For bulk follows, likes or posts aimed at gaining followers. Like Spam, it hides the account by default.

Adult content and sexually suggestive

These go on media, often automatically. Adult content is hidden from anyone who has not turned adult content on, which includes every logged-out visitor.

Inauthentic and impersonation

For bots and for accounts that look like someone else. A domain handle that you own is the fastest way to prove you are who you say.

Taken down

Not a label you can click through. The account or post is removed for everyone. Appeal from the suspension screen when you sign in.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does the rude label mean on Bluesky?

It marks content as rude or impolite, including crude language and disrespectful comments, without a constructive purpose. Bluesky's app hides it by default. If it is on one reply, only that reply is affected. If it is on your account, everything you post is hidden for people who keep the default setting.

Why does Bluesky say a post is blocked or hidden?

Either a moderation label hides it, the author blocked you or you blocked them, or the post's author limits who can see their account when logged out. This checker shows the first one. Blocks are separate from labels.

What is a Bluesky labeler?

A moderation service that adds labels. Bluesky runs the default one, and anyone can run another. You subscribe to extra labelers in Settings, then Moderation. Only Bluesky's own labels affect every user, which is why this tool checks those.

Can I check someone else's Bluesky account?

Yes. Labels are public on Bluesky, so you can check any handle, including accounts you are thinking of following or blocking. The check never signs in and never contacts the account.

How do I appeal a Bluesky label?

Open the label in the Bluesky app, on your profile for an account label or on the post for a post label, and choose Appeal. A suspended account gets an Appeal button on the suspension screen when you sign in. Bluesky's moderators reply by email.

Is this Bluesky checker free?

Yes. Ten checks a day, no account, no app password, no OAuth. It only reads public data from Bluesky's own servers.
